Tree Story (a nerd post)

photo shot from the Map Room of the Reunification Palace

A friend who visited Ho Chi Minh City recently was asking me the name of the tall forest trees in our city.  Googling brought me to the Urban Forest blog by Siyang, a Singaporean.

I absolutely love the photos Siyang took of the different dipterocarp trees in Saigon said to have been planted during the French colonial period.  It brought back memories of me doing fieldwork in my masteral class.  We did tree inventory for our Diliman campus (University of the Philippines).  It was arduous but interesting work.  I worked with a Forestry graduate from the Los Banos campus.  And I was so amazed that she was able to name all the trees around!  I wish Donna could see Saigon and name me the trees that dot the city.

The trees in front of the Bao Viet Tower along Dong Khoi St. grew so tall that the ferns were growing on top.

And the tree-lined Dong Khoi St. in front of Vincom Center is like a slice from the University of the Philippines Osmena Avenue where my college is.

And I’m not sure what these trees are called in the roundabout along Nguyen Hue St. but they look like Weeping Willows and it’s a welcome contrast from all the tall trees around.

Thanks Siyang for opening my eyes to yet another spectacular character of Saigon and Mia for asking the question.
