A new addition to the growing number of restaurants along Dong Khoi St. in District 1 is Kinh Bac Restaurant which opened just this June 13 (according to one of the hostesses). It’s right beside my favorite postcard and second-hand books shop, Bookazine.
Kinh Bac offers Vietnamese cuisine in a hallway-like dining area decorated by both Oriental and contemporary paintings. Contemporary paintings on display are entitled The Sunny Squares in oil painted by Le Huy. This one was right where I was seated:
The restaurant is furnished with inelaborate wooden tables and low benches for big groups while the only embellishment for the couples’ tables are the intricately carved flower on the backrests of the chairs.
A pond with koi fishes and fountain separates the back dining area onto the stairs to the second floor. It was a nice contrast against the low lights of the restaurant with it having natural lighting. It would be nice to have natural lighting during the day all throughout the restaurant so it would look less intimidating against the huge Oriental paintings. The low lights would work well during the evenings.
I ordered their set lunch meal of sweet and sour seafood noodle soup with fish, squid, clams, and tomato. Really hot and spicy! Kinda like tom yum. Just the way I like it!
Too bad I didn’t get to try their other dishes because I was dining alone but I did check their menu and they have a good selection at mid-range price. My meal was 49,000 VND + VAT. They serve two set meals at lunch, one is the soup and the other is a rice meal at 69,000 VND.
